most, but they were assisted by a portion of the artillery, who fired on the gunboats in the river and incidentally dropped shells in the neighbourhood of the Canton-Kowloon Railway terminus. The number of casualties has, as is usually the case, been greatly over-estimated and probably did not exceed 100. By the 14th. this section of the Lu Chun had been dispersed: some were killed,

others threw away their arms and went into hiding, while the

remainder escaped into the country to swell the ranks of local

brigands. After two days spent in negotiations most of the rebel

artillery handed over the firing pins of their guns and were pro-

-mised a gratuity of several month pay. The progress of these

conversations, however, did not prevent Lung Chi-kuang from attack-

-ing, on the night August 15-16, some 2-3,000 Lu Chun stationed

between the East Gate and Yen T'ang. They were suspected of

sedition and, being caught asleep, offered no resistance. It is

reported that on this occasion as many as three or four hundred

were massacred. The rest, leaving their weapons behind, succeeded

in escaping into the open country.

At the present moment order prevails in and

around the City and the new Tu Tu is proceeding to devote his

attention to the brigands who are now threatening important trading

centres in the Delta.

One hundred and fifty of the Punjabis returned

to Hongkong this morning.
